  • Why Healthy Goals Matter for Summer Wellbeing

The goals that truly change our lives are rarely the ones rooted in pressure or perfection; they’re the ones connected to something deeply meaningful.

Summer wellbeing is not about creating a perfect routine. For many people, especially working parents, summer can be one of the hardest times of year to stay consistent. School holidays, childcare, family plans, work deadlines, travel and disrupted routines can all make healthy habits feel harder to maintain.

By July, the goals we set earlier in the year may have changed, paused or slipped down the list. That does not mean we have failed. It simply means life has changed,  and our goals may need to change with it.

This is where healthy goals matter. Not rigid goals based on pressure or guilt, but meaningful goals that support your energy, confidence, health and quality of life during a busy season.

A goal such as 'I need to exercise more' may feel like another demand at the end of a long day. But a goal such as 'I want to have the energy to enjoy time with my family this summer' carries more emotional meaning. It connects the action to something you genuinely care about.

As our Lead Wellbeing Coach, Grant Payne explains:

  • People are far more likely to sustain change when their goals connect emotionally to the life they want to live.

What is summer wellbeing?

Summer wellbeing means looking after your physical, mental and emotional health during the summer months in a way that fits real life. It is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about making small, supportive choices that help you feel well, even when routines change.

For working parents, summer wellbeing might mean finding shorter windows for movement, planning simple meals, protecting sleep where possible, sharing responsibilities, staying hydrated, or building in moments of calm between busy days.

The key is flexibility. A healthy goal should support your life, not add more pressure to it.

Summer wellbeing goals

Outcome goals vs milestone goals

When reflecting on your summer wellbeing goals, it can help to separate outcome goals from milestone goals.

An outcome goal is the bigger picture. It might be to feel healthier, have more energy, reduce stress, improve sleep, lower blood pressure or feel more confident in your body. These goals give you direction.

Milestone goals are the smaller steps that help you get there. They are the everyday habits and actions that keep you moving forward, even when routines change. A 10-minute walk, a balanced breakfast, a glass of water before coffee, a calmer bedtime routine, or five minutes of breathing between tasks can all become meaningful milestones.

The outcome gives you the vision. The milestones give you the path.

This is especially important during summer. Your usual routine may not be realistic right now, and that is okay. Summer wellbeing is about adapting your habits so they still support you in the season you are in.

Why do healthy goals need emotional meaning?

Healthy goals are more likely to last when they are connected to something meaningful. If a goal is only linked to appearance, comparison or pressure, it can quickly feel like another task on an already full list.

The most powerful wellbeing goals often come from asking deeper questions.

  • Why do I want more energy?
  • What would better health allow me to do?
  • How do I want to feel by the end of summer?
  • Who do I want to be for myself and the people I care about?

For example, someone may begin with the goal of 'walking more'. On the surface, this sounds like a simple fitness goal. But when connected to emotional meaning, it becomes far more powerful.

Perhaps the deeper goal is: 'I want to still be able to walk independently at 100 years old'. Suddenly, the goal is not just about steps, calories or exercise. It is about freedom, independence, vitality and the ability to keep enjoying life fully.

That emotional connection changes the way we see the habit. A walk is no longer another thing to fit in. It becomes a small investment in your future self.

Why does visualising success support summer wellbeing?

Visualising success is not about imagining a perfect version of your life. It is about creating clarity.

This summer, success might not look like a flawless routine. It might look like staying calm during a busy week, finding moments of movement with your children, protecting your sleep where you can, eating in a way that supports your energy, or giving yourself permission to rest without guilt.

Success might feel like more patience, more steadiness, more confidence, or simply knowing you are still taking care of yourself in the middle of a full season.

Our LeadWellbeing Coach, Grant Payne, shares:

  • A meaningful goal gives direction to the small choices we make every day.

When you know what your goal means to you, small choices become more purposeful. You are not just going for a walk; you are choosing long-term strength. You are not just preparing a nourishing meal; you are choosing steadier energy. You are not just taking five minutes to breathe; you are choosing to respond rather than react.

Summer wellbeing is a direction, not a destination

Mid-year reflection is not about judging what you have or have not achieved so far. It is an opportunity to reconnect with what matters.

Wellbeing is not a finish line. It is a direction we keep moving towards through small, consistent choices. Some seasons will feel structured and steady. Others, like summer, may feel more unpredictable. The key is not perfection, but connection.

So, as July begins, ask yourself:

  • What do I want the rest of this year to feel like?
  • What matters most right now?
  • What small habits would support the version of me I want to become?

Because when your goals are rooted in meaning, they become easier to return to, even when life feels busy, routines change, and responsibilities pull you in different directions.

When your goals feel meaningful, your habits become more purposeful.
